I’m pretty sure they have those classes, too. But if we’re talking about killing real life culture in schools to make room for “internet culture” all I can say is that’s just really sad. You can’t order coffee in paris with Ruby on Rails.
My pick for the best album of 2001 is, coincidentally, an album I didn’t really appreciate at the time of its release. I graduated from high school in 2001, and at that time my taste in music was…in flux, to put it mildly. Pyramid Song was featured on a compilation I bought the following year. After hearing it once, I was hooked. The only Radiohead song I’d heard previously was Creep, their ubiquitous 90s radio hit, and a song I never really cared for.
So here’s to Amnesiac, my favorite album of 2001.
Is This It? The Strokes
White Blood Cells The White Stripes
Toxicity System of a Down (this one’s for you, Jill)
I’ve been toying with the idea of doing a “my favorite albums of the 00’s” post. Why not? I have so many favorites. So I’ll start things off with an album which came out in 2000, and was, in fact, the very first Modest Mouse album I heard all the way through.
Modest Mouse - The Stars are Projectors from the album The Moon and Antarctica (2000)
I appreciate this album mostly for broadening my horizons. It wasn’t something I was used to — it was raw, at times even sloppy. Its lyrics meandered from poignant to nonsensical with careless abandon. Yet somehow in what I then perceived as a feverish, chaotic thing…there is a kind of order, a kind of minimalism. There is a sense of loneliness about the album (not to mention its title) that resonates with me to this day. It has multiple layers, and its different depending on when you listen to it — though I strongly suggest you do as I did, and lay in bed in a pitch black room and listen through headphones. It does the trick.
Seriously. Read, then re-read. What Jill said was in no way offensive or even a topic to stress or get your panties in a twist over. I knew what she meant, and thought the whole thing was taken lightly by her. She was just being cute Jill. Not vicious “I hate vegans CHANGE YOUR LIFE RAWR RAWR RAWR RAWRR” Jill. Because that isn’t how she is.
She made a language suggestion. That is it.
I think your anger is stemming from something else. I’ll give you a hug if you need one. If not, then just relax. And know that not everyone is out to get you.
